Time seems to have stood still at Gesenkschmiede Hendrichs, or Hendrichs Drop Forge, in Solingen. All machines are in their old places. Even today, scissors blanks are forged in the museum plant. The factory was part of the Solingen cutlery industry’s production system, which was spread all over the city. Industrial work, highly specialized crafts, mechanization, social conditions, the change of driving energy from water to steam and diesel to electricity: more than 3000 sqm of exhibition space are waiting to be discovered.

Students of the Cologne Game Lab (CGL) of the Technical University of Cologne (TH Köln) are transforming the historic Gesenkschmiede Hendrichs into a walk-in interactive experience space. Based on a game jam in which the project was conceived in competition with other teams and selected by a jury for implementation, an audiovisual layer is added to the museum, staging the site as a stage for human interaction. Maschinenklangwerk asks to actively explore the human drive behind industrial production and its energy consumption.

Maschinenklangwerk

As part of the thematic group FUTURE_energy, the audiovisual work Maschinenklangwerk illuminates the relationship between the individual, the group, and their energy consumption. Equipped with headphones, visitors wander through the drop forge and experience an interactive soundscape that changes its intensity and content depending on their position in the room and the number of people present. In an immersive way, the work addresses the energy impact of industrial processes and consumer goods and the role of humans in this network.
